UCLan students thriving on Campus opportunities

Fri 22 May 2009

It’s not all work, work, work…

One of the important elements of CEG UCLan’s is that they are taught on the University campus – this provides a vital opportunity for students to experience campus life and that doesn’t only mean the library.

Extra-curricular activities make a big difference to the experience for students at university and also can make your CV stand out to potential employers.

UCLan students are getting involved in very different ways - click on the links to find out more about them:

     - Faez is a volunteer with the scouts

     - Abdulrahman and Waeel are enjoying making new friends with the International Society

     - Karena Lee is using the opportunity to attend lectures by famous UK journalists to get
       ahead in her future career.

Interview with Faez

Why are you studying at UCLan?
There are many reasons but the main reason is that I heard that the Business School at UCLan was rated as the top Business School in the North West for the last 2 years.

What are you studying and why?
I’m studying the Business pathway of the Undergraduate Foundation Programme to obtain the necessary study skills and basic knowledge for my degree and future studies.

Who are the Scouts?
The Scouts is an association aiming to help young people fulfill their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves.  It also aims to offer challenge and adventure for all members.

Why are you helping them?
I’m helping them because I love being engaged with other parties from different countries and learning about other people’s behaviour.

What will you gain from it?
First of all, it is part of my religious duty to help others and I can do this by looking after young people and supporting them. Secondly I will swim deeply in a multicultural and especially British culture. Finally I can add something new to my CV.

How did you find out about the scouts?
I usually go to the Students’ Union to find out if there are any events happening.  One day I met a member of the scouts outside and he asked me to become a member.

Article by Abdulrahman and Waeel

Abdulrahman and Waeel are English Language Preparation Programme students' who are spending time improving their English before starting their Foundation courses in September 2009.

On 21 February we went to Edinburgh with the International Society.

We left Preston at 6.00 am and we spent 4 hours in the bus and we met some people for the first time.

We arrived in Edinburgh at 10.00am and we put our luggage in the hostel and went sightseeing.  It is a great city and we saw the oldest building we’ve ever seen in our lives!

The people there were funny and friendly.  We visited the most famous castle in Scotland.  It was built over one thousand years ago and it sits on top of the famous Edinburgh rock.

In the evening we went to the pub and saw traditional Scottish dancing.

The next day we went shopping and had lunch together then we came back, our bus left Edinburgh at 17.30.  We spoke English the whole weekend and met people from Germany, France, Poland as well as other countries.  It was an excellent experience.

Article by Karena Lee
Karena Lee is studying on the Humanities Undergraduate Pathway to go onto a degree in Journalism.

I have wanted to be a journalist for a long time – the idea of being the first person at a scene when something happens and then reporting it to the world is so exciting.

I am from Hong Kong and I chose to study journalism in the UK as I want to work in English when I return home.

I haven’t decided yet whether I will work in newspapers or for the TV but I hope I will find out more of what I like while I’m studying.

It was a great opportunity to listen to Jon Snow who has been a journalist for over 30 years and is nationally recognised, but started off with nothing more than a dream like me.
