The University of Sunderland is an innovative, forward-thinking university with high standards of teaching, research and support that sits at the heart of one of the UK’s most up-and-coming cities. The University has strong links with industry and business, and works closely with some of the world’s leading companies.
The two campuses in Sunderland – one in the city and one on the coast – are perfectly placed to ensure a life-changing student experience. The University also has a new London campus which offers students the opportunity to study in the UK's capital city on completion of their foundation programme (limited degrees apply, please see progression degrees).
Living in Sunderland
The two outstanding campuses in Sunderland – one in the city centre and one by the sea, undoubtedly offer some of the best university facilities in the UK, in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, with Newcastle, Durham and Edinburgh nearby.
Getting around
- To get to the City Campus by Metro, use the University Metro station
- A typical journey to Newcastle on the Metro takes 25 minutes
- Sunderland has regular trains to London, York and Newcastle
- A typical journey from London to Sunderland takes approximately 3 hours 30 minutes
- You can apply for a Metro Pass from the Student Gateway Building once you have your student ID card.
The University has its own quality purpose-built accommodation, giving you the option of a single study-bedroom in a secure environment. All accommodation is self-catered, with fully equipped kitchens. The accommodation also offers all-inclusive living, which includes heating, lighting and fuel costs in with the rent.
Rent for university accommodation is among the cheapest in the country. Prices per week range from £68 to £80 for a standard room, and £88 to £90 for en-suite rooms.
There is a free Campus Bus service for students, which picks you up from your halls of residence and takes you to either Campus. This service operates throughout the day. You can also buy Travel Cards to use for the Metro at a reduced cost. For example, a Travel Card covering the city of Sunderland costs around £44 a year.

Trips, Activities, Societies and Clubs
The University of Sunderland Student Union
The University of Sunderland has more than 50 clubs and societies.
All ONCAMPUS students automatically become Student Union members. The Union exists to make students' experience at University exciting and fun whilst also giving the opportunity to make your opinions about the University heard. The Union provides a network of student support, including:
- Student representation
- Academic and welfare advice and support
- Entertainments and social activities
- Commercial outlets
- Sports and activities
CONNECT is a social group that meets on a regular basis, run by the Students’ Union it is open to all students and is a great way to meet new people and make friends and it’s FREE to join!
Students are encouraged to visit the CONNECT web page to join the club and learn about latest events, see some great photos from past activities like going to the cinema, ten pin bowling, barbecues, trips, museum and cultural visits, sport evenings, volunteering projects etc.
There is NO FEE to join CONNECT, but students are expected to pay for the activities they want to participate in (most events or trips are free, however in some cases there is a cost which is discounted to student friendly prices). CONNECT is also on Facebook.
Sport Facilities
The new range of sport packages enable students to participate in activities or sessions which suit everyone.
The University's £12m sport and social area was opened in 2009. Thousands of people have already used its excellent facilities including students, staff, local schools, and even some VIPs. The building has been awarded various industry awards and has also hosted major events such as the BBC North East and Yorkshire Sport Awards, International Netball, The BBC Politics Show - Election Special etc.
The spectacular fitness suite is currently welcoming new members, giving you the chance to join up to one of the North East’s leading facilities. Memberships to the fitness suite are limited and it is therefore advised that anyone wishing to join does so sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
