Film Production at the University of Sunderland

Fri 27 Oct 2023

We are pleased to share that the University of Sunderland has ranked 5th in the UK for Film Production and Photography in this year’s Guardian University Rankings. International students who study with ONCAMPUS Sunderland have the opportunity for guaranteed progression to several degrees within the subject, including BA (Hons) Film Production and BA (Hons) Film and Media.

The facilities at the University of Sunderland offer state of the art equipment and broadcast-quality production studios to develop your practical skills, while the teaching staff made up of industry professionals and experts share their wealth of knowledge across writing, directing, and filming in lectures and seminars.

The University of Sunderland also has fantastic industry links, namely acclaimed independent production company Fulwell 73, which in 2021 launched a regional office on the university campus!

Fulwell 73 – named as an homage to Sunderland AFC, who last won a major trophy in the 1973 FA Cup final – was founded in 2005 and produces work across a wide range of genres including feature films, adverts, documentaries, and music videos. Since its inception the company has expanded internationally, with an office based in Los Angeles, and has been responsible for producing some of the most notable reality television shows of recent years, including The Kardashians as well as The Late Late Show with James Corden, who became the fifth partner in the company in 2017. Fulwell 73’s Netflix documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die received widespread acclaim and is widely believed to have inspired Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ interest in purchasing Wrexham AFC.

This regional office of Fulwell 73, called Fulwell North, is based in the David Puttnam Media Centre at the University of Sunderland, where Film Production courses are based. Students on Film Production courses are therefore able to benefit from unique insight into how an established and successful production company works while they complete their studies and develop their skills to prepare for a career in industry.

There is still time to apply to join ONCAMPUS Sunderland this January, with the opportunity to progress to the University of Sunderland in September 2024 upon successful completion of the foundation programme. More information on the progression degrees available to ONCAMPUS students can be found here.
