The education system

The Netherlands

Higher education in the Netherlands is known for its high quality and its international study environment. With more than 1,500 international study programmes and courses, it has the largest offer of English-taught programmes in continental Europe.

Dutch students are required to complete 14 years of formal education in order to study an Undergraduate degree at a Research university.

Undergraduate degrees require 3 years of full time study and Master's degrees range from 1-3 years.

As an international student, if you have fewer than 14 years of education and/or do not meet the University’s direct entry requirements, you must complete the Undergraduate Foundation Programme.

The Undergraduate Foundation Programme

This pathway is designed specifically for international students looking to progress to the University of Amsterdam.

  • Be part of the university from Day One with access to all the university’s facilities, clubs and societies whilst studying your foundation programme
  • Up to 26-hour-week academic and English programmes to prepare you thoroughly for the demands of a undergraduate degree
  • All programmes and degrees are delivered in English
