The City of Birmingham

The UK’s second largest city, Birmingham, is also the youngest major city in Europe with 40% of the population under 25 years old!

Aston, Birmingham

A bustling, vibrant and multi-cultural city, Birmingham offers award-winning theatre, contemporary art, designer fashion and premier league football (it’s home to Aston Villa, Prince William’s favourite football club).

If food is your passion, there are endless options from curry in the Balti Triangle to Michelin-starred restaurants in the city, or chocolate indulgence at Cadbury World. Whatever your taste, Birmingham has something to suit everyone.

Over 300 company headquarters are based in Birmingham (including HSBC, Land Rover and Jaguar) offering great links to industry throughout your degree.

It is home to one of Europe’s largest shopping malls alongside a wide range of shops, restaurants, bars and global brands such as Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Some seriously famous musicians and bands have come from Birmingham, the Heavy Metal group Black Sabbath, British Reggae group UB40 and the likes of synth-pop Duran Duran. With multiple live music venues, including the Arena Birmingham and the O2 Institute, there are venues to suit any musical preference.

Birmingham is brilliantly placed in the centre of England so travelling to other parts of the UK is easy. It’s 90 minutes to London in the South or Manchester in the North, and is close to some of the best English countryside. With its own airport offering direct flights to many European cities, travelling further afield couldn’t be easier.

It's also one of the UK’s greenest cities with over 8,000 acres and 600 parks and open spaces – that’s more than Paris! In addition, Birmingham has more canals than Venice, offering many routes for walking, running or cycling and the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
