Learning about Brexit

Tue 23 May 2017

Introducing contemporary topics such as Brexit during a foundation year is really useful for international students. It gives them chance to develop their critical thinking skills by looking at different sides of the argument. This all helps in making informed decisions in academic work.

Brexit. Where do you start to find the facts?

When learning something new, real facts are important. By looking at the facts you broaden your understanding of the subject and start to develop an informed perspective.

One of the many benefits of studying at ONCAMPUS London is having the opportunity to attend talks and lectures by experts - those ‘in the know’.

Throughout the year, university lecturers visit ONCAMPUS London and offer a series of talks on contemporary global issues. And right now Brexit is one of the most topical issues around.

Recently, Dr Russell Gerrard from City, University of London spoke to Business Undergraduate Foundation students about some of the reasons for the vote of Britain to leave the European Union. During the lecture, the professor introduced the background to the situation, focusing on the main issues and arguments for business and finance – from both the position of the UK and Europe.

Students often tell us they leave at the end of the lecture inspired to read more, and this is an essential skill they can practise in preparation for degree study at university.

We asked students what they liked about the lectures from Professors at University of London.

“I like participating in these lectures because they contain knowledge I cannot study on my own.” says one student. “It’s great to have real world life examples of the topics we learn in class.” says another.

Peter McLaughlin, Centre Head comments “to understand the complex societies and problems in the world of today, learners need to be informed. They should take with them knowledge and perspectives drawn from expertise in their subject fields.

The internet and the media as sources are not enough. The quality of teaching and learning at ONCAMPUS London is exciting and serious. I encourage all students to be inspired; to be informed.”

And of course, the great thing about being in the lecture with students from all over the world is that the debate quickly opens up for different perspectives and experiences from those in the room.
