Planning to Study in the UK? Here's Your Guide to Choosing a University

Fri 27 Jan 2017

There are currently over 130 universities in the UK, all offering a diverse range of programmes and facilities for students in lots of exciting locations. With so much choice, finding the right one can be a challenge, particularly for international students. They may be unable to visit the UK before they apply, and have to learn about unfamiliar locations and institutions online, as well as research complex programmes and courses in a different language.

Luckily, UK universities offer a lot of different ways to make the process easier for students applying from abroad, and with a bit of research, you should be able to find a number of options that suit your needs.

Read on to find out how to get started.

Research Universities Online Before You Study in the UK

Before you apply to a British university, you should look to do as much research as possible. You can visit the university website to find out more about the programme you are interested in, and what facilities they offer on campus, such as computer labs, accommodation, and extracurricular activities.

In addition, it can be helpful to research the location of the university you are considering. Is it in a city or small town? How expensive is it for a student to live there? What is there to do and see in the area? Getting the answers to these questions will give you a better understanding about whether it is the right place for you.

Take A Campus Tour - In Person or Online

Booking a campus tour or attending an open day at a university will allow you to see their facilities for yourself, explore the surrounding area, and even speak to your course tutors in person about the programme you are applying for.

Of course, many international students looking to study in the UK will not be able to visit before they apply. Fortunately, many universities, such as Queen Mary University of London now offer virtual tours online, which can allow you to take a tour of the campus without leaving home.

Speak to Current Students to Find out What It’s like to Study in the UK

Another good way to find out more about your course is to talk to current students or alumni online, and British universities are usually happy to put you in touch with someone during the enquiry process.

In fact, some even have current students who act as ‘student ambassadors’ for specific countries.  This service can be great for international students, and gives you the chance to speak to someone from your own culture who understands your specific needs and concerns.

Double Check the Admission Requirements for UK Universities

Once you have decided what universities you want to apply for, you should make sure you know what their admissions requirements are. Applications for UK universities are usually made through the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) system, and some programmes may also have other requirements, such as submitting a portfolio or doing an interview.

As an international student, you also need to be aware of the English language proficiency standards required for your degree, which can vary depending on what university and programme you are applying to. UK pathways can offer a solution, providing you with English language training which is tailored specifically for your chosen area of study. UK pathways can even offer guaranteed progression to your chosen degree once you complete your programme successfully.
